In creep tests, if the strain is kept constant, and the applied stress is gradually removed in stages, the whole of the strain is recovered. The effects of such stress relaxation under natural conditions is the extension in that very direction in which the stress was being applied such as development of sheet joints in granite or sedimentary stylolites becoming tectonic stylolites by folding of original ones.
