FOLD, DEGREE OF ASYMMETRY

FOLDS, SYMMETRICAL

If the two limbs of a single fold are of the same length, the fold is called symmetrical, otherwise asymmetrical. The latter could be described as S or Z defending upon their sense, a fact which is utilized in mapping the major folds. A Z fold is negative asymmetrical formed by dextral simple shear while S fold is positive asymmetrical formed by sinistral couple.
