AUGENS AS SHEAR CRITERION
Felsic layers and porphyroblasts in schist or banding of similar
material in gneisses (Coarse grained, color banded metamorphic fabric

light-quartz, feldspar rich- layers and dark -amphibole, biotite- layers) may be eye shaped on account of
differential extension. Because of a shear component, the augens may give
indication about the sense of shear as they do in this case a left handed
one (Photo P Diwan, Ghisauli gneisses, C India).
