AUGENS AS SHEAR CRITERION

Felsic layers and porphyroblasts in schist or banding of similar material in gneisses (Coarse grained, color banded metamorphic fabric Produced by melting and recrystallization. Common color banding : light-quartz, feldspar rich- layers

and dark -amphibole, biotite- layers) may be eye shaped on account of differential extension. Because of a shear component, the augens may give indication about the sense of shear as they do in this case a left handed one (Photo P Diwan, Ghisauli gneisses, C India).
