The value of stress, generally called yield stress up to which the rock behaves elastically. This in reality is the elastic limit since beyond this the material response is complex. It may be plastic, viscous, viscoplastic or any of the models that are compounded out of pure elastic, pure plastic and pure viscous involving spring, dashpot and a piston respectively.
