TENSILE STRESS, TENSILE STRENGTH

Tensile fracture - separation of a body across a surface normal to the direction of least principal stress, where s 3<0. There is no offset parallel to the fracture surface. The relationship between the tension fractures and the principal stresses follows from the observation of zero offset on the fractures. Zero offset indicates zero shear stress is applied to this surface, therefore it must be a principal plane
