An unconformity can be recognised by the presence of conglomeratic bed at the interface, fossils of widely different ages either side of the interface, marked variation of attitude of strata in the two sequences, generally but not necessarily. Older sequences are, generally but not necessarily more strongly deformed, with more complex history of igneous intrusions.
