Fold geometry is always studied in a section perpendicular to the hinge line of a fold. This is called FOLD PROFILE or PROFILE SECTION. Natural folds may show naturally developed profile section for studying the geometry if their hinges have suffered extension during late stages of fold development. Such surfaces are therefore actually naturally available since fold hinges do rotate towards either e1 or e2 of the finite strain ellipsoid during progressive evolution of folds.
